The 21 Taras

Tara 1 Tara, Tibetan: sGrol ma, exists in Tibetan Buddhism in 21 different forms and different colors, see also Tara, in M. Eliade (ed. in chief), The Encyclopedia of Religion, Vol. 13&14, Macmillan, New York, USA, 1995, pp. 337-339. is the protective deity of Tibet. At the same time, she is worshipped as a Buddha, an awakened being and also as the mother of all Buddhas, as well as a Bodhisattva, a person who rejects Buddhahood in order to teach living beings in the cycle of existence or to accompany them on their own path to Buddhahood.
Legend has it that she was a princess who took a vow to attain Buddhahood in her female body, which she did.
