Guinan: Seeing the Past, Present, and Future

As a SyFy fan and Star Trek fan since childhood, I was thrilled by the role of “Guinan,” played by Whoopi Goldberg, in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Guinan also reappears in “Picard,” once as a young woman and once as an older woman – again played by Whoopi Goldberg.

Guinan is a mysterious character, an alien, an El-Aurian, of indefinable age, probably several hundred years old. Around 1893, she was already active on Earth in the Star Trek universe, but also on her home planet El-Auria. That planet was destroyed around 2265. This means that in the 24th century, the time of “TNG,” she is at least 500 years old. She thus knows the past, present, and future and often advises the crew of the Enterprise in the Ten Forward Lounge, the starship’s bar, but also withholds knowledge that is still inappropriate for humans.
